Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of people have experienced emotional distress such as depression or anxiety, requiring mental health services. In accordance with this situational demand, the purpose of this study was to investigate effectiveness of brief unified transdiagnostic protocol(UP) for undergraduates with depression or anxiety symptoms. Thirty-nine participants with COVID-19 stress (above 25%), and either depression or anxiety symptoms were screened. They were randomly assigned to three groups: the brief unified transdiagnostic protocol treatment (N=14), the cognitive behavioral treatment comparison group (N=12), and the wait-list control group (N=13). Each treatment program consisted of five, non-face-to-face group sessions. As a result, the brief UP had significant effects on depression and difficulties of social distancing compared to CBT. Anxiety, fear of infection, and anger toward others were also decreased in the brief UP group compared to the control group. However, the effect of the brief UP on difficulties in emotion regulation was not significant. Finally, life satisfaction in the brief UP group was higher than that of the control group and similar to that of the CBT group. No significant differences were found in student adaptation to college. Taken together, these results suggest that brief UP had overall therapeutic effectiveness and indicate greater improvement than cognitive behavioral treatment, especially in depression and difficulties of social distancing. The implications and limitations of the present study were discussed.
